MICHELLE
MADOW ON EBOOKS VS PRINT BOOKS
Hi!
Thank you so much for having me on your blog to discuss my opinion on
ebooks vs print books!
I
became very aware of the Kindle around 2009. I remember my first
thoughts about e-readers—I wondered why on Earth people would ever
want one! I loved browsing the bookstore for new books, holding the
physical book when I read, and displaying my books on my shelves. And
I wondered, why would I pay a similar amount of money for an ebook as
a paperback? It made no sense, and it seemed silly that anything
could ever replace a physical book.
But
then in 2010, I went on a vacation with my family. As always, my
carry on bag was packed with books, and it weighed so much that it
was hard to maneuver. I spent a very long time figuring out what
books I wanted to bring on vacation. My brother already had a Kindle,
and when I watched him use it, I actually became jealous. It must be
nice to be able to bring all your unread books on vacation with you,
and to have it weigh so little!
After
that trip, I bought my first Kindle, and I’ve never looked back. I
LOVE my Kindle. It’s great for traveling, because of the reasons I
said above. But also, I prefer the reading experience on Kindle. It’s
so easy to hold, and pushing buttons instead of turning pages
actually allows me to read faster. Also, ebooks have so many great
sales, so it’s easy to find fantastic bargain on great books that
you wouldn’t be able to find in the print world. Now, whenever I
buy a new book, I always buy the e-version!
As
a writer, ebooks have 100% helped me. I’m a hybrid author—meaning
that I’m published both traditionally and independently. My
independently published series sells mainly in ebook format—this is
because I’m able to offer the first one as a free download, and
then the rest of the series at a reduced price … all while getting
more money in royalties per book than I get for my traditionally
published books! Ebooks have paved the road to indie publishing, and
have made it more possible for writers to have careers doing what we
love—writing books for readers to enjoy.
