Thank you to Tamara for answering our questions today.
Thank you so much for inviting me to
your blog! I can’t wait to get started!
1. How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing for nine years now.
I started out just trying to prove to myself that I could write a
whole book. Once I did that, I joined the Romance Writers of America
and a local chapter of that group called the Midwest Fiction Writers.
From there, I started meeting with five other writers in a critique
group. We met once a week, and I learned to write from them. They
were amazing. I still critique with one of those writers today.
2. Where do your ideas for characters
and stories come from?
Good question. For characters, a lot of
my process is bang-my-head-on-the-keyboard brainstorming. I also have
a couple of great books that help me think through the type of person
each character is. Heroes & Heroines: Sixteen Master
Archetypes by Tami Cowden, Caro LaFever, and Sue Viders and
Fallen Heroes: Sixteen Master Villain Archetypes by Tami
Cowden.
Story ideas come from all over the
board. Some come through researching a topic and wondering what would
happen if… I’ve also gotten ideas from songs. And sometimes a
scene pops into my head from nowhere, and I expand on it to see where
it goes.
3. Where do you do most of your writing?
At my kitchen table. I don’t have a
desk, which is okay. I love that I’m surrounded by windows and
sunlight…and food.
4. Do you write every day?
I write pretty much every weekday
morning. I used to get up really early every single day of the week,
which is supposed to be the best time for thinking because you aren’t
worrying about what you have to do for the day when you first get up.
This worked great for quite a while, but I found that I wanted a life
too - days to sleep in if I wanted to. Unless I’m pressed with a
deadline, I also skip working on days my husband or kids are home. I
feel like I don’t want to miss those moments with them.
5. Who is your favorite character that
you created?
I have several favorites. In Once Upon a Masquerade, I love my hero and heroine, but there’s a secondary character, Spencer Henley, that makes me laugh. This character enjoys life to the fullest, and finds the drama and intrigue of high society extremely amusing. He dresses up in the most fun costumes at the masquerades, and loves to annoy the hero whenever he can. Love him!

New York City, 1883
A Prince Charming meets his match…
Self-made shipping magnate Christopher Black first spies Rebecca Bailey at a masquerade ball and is captivated by her refreshing naiveté and sparkling beauty. She’s a stark contrast to the hollow behavior of the ton and the guile of his former fiancée, but the closer he gets to her secrets, the further she pushes him away.
A Cinderella with a secret…
Rebecca is drawn to the charismatic Christopher from the first, but she cannot risk him discovering that she is really a housemaid impersonating an heiress. Her father's life depends on it.
A Happily Ever After that could never be…
When Christopher’s investigation of the murder of his best friend leads him straight to Rebecca, he fears his ingénue may be a femme fatale in disguise. Now he must decide if he can trust the woman he's come to love, or if her secrets will be his downfall.
About Tamara:
A small town girl with a big
imagination, Tamara Hughes had no idea what to do with her life.
After graduating from college, she moved to a big city, started a
family and a job, and still struggled to find that creative outlet
she craved. An avid reader of romance, she gave writing a try and
became hooked on the power of exploring characters, envisioning
adventures, and creating worlds. She enjoys stories with interesting
twists and heroines who have the grit to surmount any obstacle, all
without losing the ability to laugh. To learn more, stop by her
