About The Author –

Tea and a Book Interview

What inspired you to write your first book?
I was lucky enough to have parents who valued reading, and I grew up loving stories. My mom was a librarian, and she helped me find library books that particularly appealed to me. Reading great books inspired me to try writing my own, and I still learn a lot about writing by reading!
When did you first start writing?
I was about ten when I started writing stories. We didn’t write a lot of fiction in school, so writing became a hobby.
When did you finish your first book?
I finished my first novel when I was fifteen. It was never published—for which I’m truly grateful—but I’m proud of it. The experience proved that I could write a novel. After that I focused on learning my craft and learning about the publishing industry.
How did you choose the genre you write in?
I have always loved history. My family often visited museums and historic sites when I was a child, and I started reading historical fiction and biographies at a young age. I’ve had 33 books published, and all are about history and heritage in one way or another. I enjoy mysteries in part because the genre supports series. As a reader, I love finding a wonderful series and knowing that I can go on a long multi-book ride with the characters.
My Chloe Ellefson mysteries feature a curator at a large historic site (I job I used to hold!) and each volume features a special historic place or museum. Chloe gets involved in crime-solving because something that happened in the past influences current events.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Well, Laura Ingalls Wilder tops the list! I devoured her books as a child. I re-read them several times while writing Death on the Prairie: A Chloe Ellefson Mystery (which features Wilder homesites), and marvel at how well they hold up for adults.
My favorites list is constantly changing, but in general I look for fiction with complex characters, an engaging plot, and a strong sense of place.
What book are you reading now?
I just began The Daring Ladies of Lowell, by Kate Alcott.
My blog is called Tea and a book. I love to just sit, and read a good book, drink tea, have a muffin or maybe a scone.
What is your favorite type of tea?
Orange spice.
If you don’t drink tea, what’s your favorite beverage to drink while reading a good book?
Although I do enjoy tea on wintry days, my vice is mocha lattes. I’m addicted.
Do you have a favorite food/recipe to go with your tea?
