1:
I flinch at the
thud of the doors closing. It’s not just a thud—it’s a goodbye. A cruel impulse
turns me to Faye’s shanty. It fits in with the rest of them—wood so old it’s
probably soft, rooftops that might’ve once been pointy, but have slumped over
time. Hers reeks of decay. Maybe it’s the rotten memories the walls hold.
Rotten or not, I can’t look away. My feet move of their own accord and don’t
stop until my breath is on her door. My fingers almost brush it, but I make
them fall. She’s probably sleeping in her usual position—face down on the
floor.
What good would
it do?
I take a single
step backward, but it’s not enough. I turn and run. I run past every sad
structure, past the much taller Oak Hand, letting the wind whip in my eyes and
blur my vision.
