To cruise, or not to cruise – that is the question!

Because each of my Cait Morgan Mysteries is set in a different location (South of France, BC wine country, Pacific coastal Mexico, Las Vegas, a Welsh castle, and now a cruise ship) I’m often asked, “Do you always visit the settings for your books?”

The answer is yes, I do – or at least, I have always already spent a good deal of time there. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled a good deal during my life – often on business, and sometimes for pleasure. I’ve spent a lot of time, over many occasions, in various wonderful parts of the world, and I’m delighted to now have the chance to take my readers to places I know and love, so they can, hopefully, share at least a little of my enthusiasm for the setting.

THE CORPSE WITH THE DIAMOND HAND takes place on a luxury cruise ship that’s been sailing around the Hawaiian Islands and is now on its return route to Vancouver, Canada. I’ve been lucky enough to have spent what I calculate to have been a total of about fourteen months on various cruise ships, over the years. That’s a lot of five-course dinners! Indeed, my husband and I were married on the island of Oahu, and took this very cruise (without the corpse, I’m pleased to say) for our own honeymoon.

On my voyages I’ve met people who are enthusiastic cruisers (I know a couple who have cruised at least 150 times with just one line!) and those who are doing it for the first (and maybe only) time. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea – though these days there’s a cruise of some sort to suit pretty much everyone’s taste, and wallet. Some folks who haven’t done it don’t like the idea of not spending a good deal of time in one location, and dislike the idea they might be told when to eat and what to wear. While day-long stops at ports of call aren’t the ideal way to see a place properly, I agree they can help if you’re trying to decide where you’d like to spend more time on a full vacation, and where you can happily say – “Not for me, thanks!”

With dining choices widening, and dress codes being relaxed, the “bad old days” of formal attire and set meal times are disappearing – too fast for some folks. Yes, there are the more formal cruise-lines still, and the absolutely casual. There are the “eat where and when you want” lines, and the “two seatings, pick one” ships. It’s pretty much open season on the high seas as far as those choices go.

Ships are becoming bigger – and smaller. They are sleekly minimalist in their decor – or over-the-top-themed. Staffing levels are pretty high – though you might never work out how your stateroom attendant knows you’ve left your room to make up the bed! The one thing that doesn’t change? The sea!

I know it sounds obvious, but my favorite part of cruising is sitting and watching the sea. The foam of the wake is transfixing, the colors of the ocean changing from region to region; sometimes the sea is an “impossible” color. It’s fascinating. From palest turquoise to black as coal, with every shade and hue of blue, green, and grey between, it’s always different. I sometimes find an hour has passed and all I’ve done is stare at the ocean!

So, if that’s your sort of thing, you might enjoy a cruise – whatever the dining and socializing might be like. I’m lucky to live near a port – Vancouver, BC – so picking up a last-minute discounted room is often a possibility, and there are no/few flight costs/hassle. If you’re not so lucky, don’t despair…there’s always the possibility of a lottery win – or you could read this book and experience life onboard with Cait Morgan!
