How did you build
Darian and Desiree’s relationship?
For me, it was
really important to make Darian and Desiree’s relationship
realistic, romantic, and strong. I set out to do that by first
starting with the fact that they’ve known each other since grade
school. Adding to that bond is the fact that Darian used to stand up
for Desiree against her childhood bully. I weaved in stories about
outings to Darian’s family’s treehouse as kids, and times they
spent together and experiences they shared.
In
the beginning of the book however, we learn that Darian is jailed for
the murder of his parents. Since Desiree firmly believes in The
Protectorate, she has no doubt that this conviction is right. Because
of that, she is disgusted by him and believes she must have read him
wrong from the beginning. If The Protectorate says he is guilty, then
he must be. So their relationship changes from one of friends to
enemies and back again, to a romantic relationship that develops as a
slow burn and as trust and feelings develop. I hope people fall in
love with them as much I as did.
