Author Guest Post

I’m often asked how I come up with settings and the characters in my cozy mysteries. I think one of the most fun things about writing cozy mysteries, as opposed to some other genres, is that you not only get to create characters, which you can do in any novel, but you get to create settings that probably only existed in your mind.

The author can create these setting any way he or she wants - although I have found that my characters definitely talk to me the whole time I’m writing and often the novel goes in a completely different direction than I had intended when I began.

Kelly’s Koffee Shop is set in the small town of Cedar Bay, Oregon. I remember years ago when my family and I were on a motorhome trip along the western coast of the United States, we had a memorable meal at a small little restaurant that was located on a dock. I’ve never forgotten it and that was probably the genesis for Cedar Bay.

As for the characters – I love to cook and I love dogs, so creating a story where those were at the forefront was pretty easy to do. Kelly is not based on me, but I did make her a little older than a lot of the cozy mystery protagonists I’ve run across. I believe there’s a huge group of women, in particular, who can’t really relate to what is happening in a twenty something’s life, but they can certainly understand what happens when a husband dies of cancer, there are problems with children, or life doesn’t go exactly where you think it’s going to. This book is about some of the problems that teens encounter and some of the problems that those who would fit in the “boomer” range or a little under, encounter.

There is also a theme of being given a second chance at love – all the sweeter when it’s unexpected. I’ve received quite a bit of feedback that people are glad there are books out there in this genre that really speak to what’s happening in their lives. I hope that I’ve provided that.

Food and dogs. Food is an integral part of the book because a lot of the action in the book revolves around Kelly’s Koffee Shop, a small town coffee shop where everyone gathers to glean information on what’s happening, whether it’s real or rumor. People often feel a need to come together and share the aftermath of events. With food being such a necessary ingredient in the book, I would have been remiss if I didn’t include some of the recipes for the mouth-watering dishes prepared and talked about in the book, and yes, I’ve cooked them all and they are family recipes.

Rebel, Kelly’s drug-sniffing four legged friend, is based on a dog that my husband and I had for many years. He really was our protector. Nothing was ever going to happen to us on his watch and it didn’t. Unfortunately the time to say goodbye came and only recently did we feel we were ready for another dog. So, on Valentine’s Day (how appropriate!), we’re bringing home this little female fawn toward the back with white around her neck and her tongue hanging out and guess what we’ve named her? Kelly. Fitting, we thought!
