Virginia just nodded, suddenly feeling really nervous, like a shy teenage girl standing at the edge of a dance floor, waiting for someone, anyone to ask her to dance.

Why isn’t he saying something?

“Maybe we should schedule this for another night, when the girls are able to join us?”

“Why?” he asked.

Virginia’s cheeks flushed. “Do you think it’s appropriate for the chief of surgery to go out with an attending?”

“We’re going to have dinner, as friends. Just think of it that way, if you’re nervous. I think a boss can have a friendly dinner with an employee.” He grinned. “We’ll save Chinatown and the dim sum for the girls. How about we catch the streetcar and head down to a diner on the Embarcadero?”

Virginia hesitated. “I don’t know.”

“Come on, Virginia, help me out. I want to give the girls space with their grandparents. Don’t make me be a fifth wheel to their time together and I rarely have a moment free without them.”

Go on. Live a little.

“What the heck. You’re right. Lead the way.”
