Excerpt:

To whoever reads this: I feel that I must apologize if what you find on these pieces of paper appears to be nothing more than a collection of near-indecipherable words. I can assure you that I have tried everything I can think of, and yet I cannot keep my hands from trembling. This, however, is only a symptom of my much greater problems.

I cannot eat, or sleep, or even close my eyes for longer than the briefest of moments. I feel as if I’m about to lose my mind, but I’m clear enough to realize that I have to get this story off my chest, before it consumes whatever sanity I have left. Unfortunately, the only recipient I can trust with a story as bizarre and horrible as this are the same pieces of paper upon which these words are written.

For officers of the Eldritch City Police Department, no two days are alike. Even with this in mind, yesterday morning would still single itself out as peculiar. As I entered the precinct to begin my shift, I met a man who I realized was from out of town. It was clear that he was uncomfortable since he was constantly scratching his arm and shifting his gaze. It was as if he was trying to view the entire room at once.

There are many things that can be said of Eldritch City, but the one thing people always remember is the air. It’s not that it has a particular smell, but it has a way of sticking to your skin, like wet clothes on a rainy day. Us locals usually say that it is due to the humidity that comes with being in a warm coastal city, but humid air does not leave you with a feeling of being watched, or that something terrible is about to happen. Given time, one learns to hide this discomfort. People from out of town, however, usually haven’t learnt the knack.

The man introduced himself as Deputy Swanson of the Heartbrook Sheriff’s office. Upon learning my name, he raised his eyebrows in surprise. “It would seem I am in luck,” he said. “It is in fact you that I have come here to see.”

Before continuing the conversation, I invited Swanson back to my desk — I have yet to earn my own office — and offered him a choice of coffee or tea, of which he chose the latter. When we were both sitting comfortably, I asked what had brought him all the way here from Heartbrook. To this he responded by handing me a newspaper article, dating back nine years. The article was an interview with a younger me regarding a murder case out by Mirkwood. I knew the article well, not just because I was the subject of the interview, but also because the case in question had been troubling me ever since I had been assigned to it.

Nine years earlier, for their summer-break, the Phillips family had gone out to their newly built cabin in Mirkwood, on the outskirts of the city. Only a day into their vacation, Mr. Phillips and his daughter, Julia, were brutally murdered. Their bodies had been mutilated to the point of being barely recognizable — large portions of flesh were missing. It was almost as if something had fed on them. The coroner couldn’t rule out an animal attack, but thought it unlikely since the wounds were inconsistent with the bite of any species known to be living in Mirkwood.

About the Author:

Robin was born on a cold winter night in Oslo, Norway, 1989. Growing up, he was always fond of telling stories, leading people to wonder when, not if, he would move on to writing stories of his own. Inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, he wrote his first short story, 'Beneath', in 2015.

Dragons are People, Too by Sarah Nicolas Release Day Blitz and Giveaway

Dragons Are People, Too
Release Date: 04/28/15
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
Never judge a dragon by her human cover...

Sixteen-year-old Kitty Lung has everyone convinced she’s a normal teen—not a secret government operative, not the one charged with protecting the president’s son, and certainly not a were-dragon. The only one she trusts with the truth is her best friend—and secret crush—the über-hot Bulisani Mathe.

Then a junior operative breaks Rule Number One by changing into his dragon form in public—on Kitty’s watch—and suddenly, the world knows. About dragons. About the Draconic Intelligence Command (DIC) Kitty works for. About Kitty herself.

Now the government is hunting down and incarcerating dragons to stop a public panic, and a new shape-shifting enemy has kidnapped the president’s son. Kitty and Bulisani are the last free dragons, wanted by both their allies and their enemies. If they can’t rescue the president’s son and liberate their fellow dragons before getting caught themselves, dragons might never live free again.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today! I have an excerpt for you. In this scene, the CIA has just torn apart Kitty’s father’s tea shop looking for her. She’s hovering invisible against the roof. This scene is a great example of Kitty and Sani’s relationship.

I know my father's dragon-self must be searing with rage, as mine is, but he doesn't show it. "Told you she wasn't here," he says simply.

"That's too bad," Cleft Chin says. He shrugs. "At least we'll be returning one rogue dragon to the compound."

One rogue dragon? I don't think there are any other dragons out on assignment today due to last night's mishap. Domestic missions had been immediately recalled and foreign missions were told to hold off on returning until further notice was given. Who could they be bringing in?

When one of the thugs takes out a pair of handcuffs, I realize they're talking about my father. My dragon-self roars in my head, the sound drowning out all logical thought.

"No!" I yell, but only Sani can hear me. My ability protects us from being heard, though I'm ready to lose control of that when Sani places a hand on the side of my dragon-head.

"Kitty." He sounds scared, but far more in control than I am. "Look at me."

I can't. These assholes are putting handcuffs on my wheelchair-bound father and I'm calculating how many seconds it would take for me to rip all of their throats out. Less than three, I’d bet.

"Your father doesn't want you caught," he says. "They have half an army outside and I still can't change."

They start wheeling him out and the full length of my dragon body tenses. I'm thinking, as mad as I am, I could take out the bulk of the U.S. Army right now. If I let the dragon take full control, I probably wouldn't even feel bad about it. I loosen my hold on the magnetic currents keeping me aloft and we descend a few inches.

"Look at me." I hear Sani's plea on the very edge of my rage-colored world. "Damn it, Kitty!"

Excerpt;

"Hello?" I said.

"Hi..." Linda answered hesitantly.

I immediately turned back to Jake in alarm.

Jake shared my alarm. He turned on his right turn signal to get off the freeway.

"Do you need something, Linda?" I asked.

Jake took the Brookhurst South exit and started looking for somewhere to pull over.

"Could you...could you pick up the girls today..." I could hear her voice breaking. She sounded scared.

"What's wrong?" I nearly shouted. "Linda? Are you okay?"

Jake turned into a gas station and pulled over behind the station office.

"I..."

We heard the sound of Linda's phone being moved around.

"What a truly special occasion..." a deep, raspy male voice said.

I immediately felt sick.

"I never thought I'd speak to a female Seduman," the voice continued. "You and I...two of a kind...so much in common my dear..."

"Where's Linda?" I demanded.

"We can talk about that over dinner, too," he replied, his arrogant smugness making me more nauseous with every word.

"What do you want?" I asked, my throat dry, dreading the answer.

"The ascendance of the House of Raum. But that's more of a long-term goal. For today, we can start with dinner."

"Never!" I shouted. I felt my hair ignite. I immediately opened my eyes and jerked my head away from the headrest so as not to burn up the car. I grabbed the door handle and in one motion shoved open the door and twisted myself out of the car so that I was facing it, still holding the phone away from my face. My eyes and hair were openly on fire in the middle of the day, but I was far too pissed off to be self-conscious.

"Release Linda this instant!"

"You can throw as many tantrums as you wish, Alexandra. That's not going to happen."

Hearing him use my name made me almost as nauseous as the idea of him touching me.

"I am Lady Firebird!" I said.

"Lady Firebird?" He repeated dismissively. "How old are you, twelve? You get that from a video game? Or the Renaissance Faire? Your favorite comic book?"

The Seduman from the House of Raum burst into a cruel laugh. "You really don't know what you're dealing with, do you?"

"You don't know what you're dealing with!" I retorted.

"Fair enough," he said. "I don't. You clearly mean something to your House. I have a nice thing going here, building up my House with fresh rumam, and even if you're just a petulant brat there's no need for me to antagonize another Sedu House. So I'm willing to make you and your House a deal. You may want to write this down, Alex. This is the part that's important, and you don't want to miss any of it because you're too busy being puerile."

"Go on," I fumed. I was seriously considering taking back my not-killing-anyone policy.

"I will move my operation to another state, out of your way. I just have a few loose ends to tie up, and I'll be out of here in a day or two. If you don't try to interfere or locate me in any way, when I leave I'll release Linda. If you or anyone else gets in my way or tries anything...she's Sedu food."

I felt furious. Helpless. Insulted. And the worst part was, part of me kinda believed him. I did feel over my head.

"Did you catch all that?"

Shannyn is a former English teacher, who now works as a part-time editor while raising her three kids.

Even though she wrote from high school through college (mostly poetry), she’d never considered a career as an author. Writing fell by the wayside as she focused her energy on creating lesson plans and new and fabulous ways to torment her teen students. One group in particular dubbed her “The Torture Master,” a title she carried into motherhood.

After the birth of baby number two, Shannyn resigned from teaching and fell in love with reading romance novels. She read so many books so quickly that her husband teased, “If you’re going to read so many damn books, why don’t you just write one?”

So she did.

That first book is safely buried on her hard drive, but the process set Shannyn on the path to where she is today—agented with a debut ebook coming out with Kensington in late 2012.

She is recovering from her Diet Coke addiction, fears putting her foot in her mouth on social media, and has a renewed appreciation for the bad girls of the world.

Shannyn is represented by Frances Black and Jennifer Mishler of Literary Counsel.
